Opening Night Speaker

Dr Izak Fourie

After qualifying as an urologist in 1980 Izak Fourie spent 8 years in private practice. During this time he was intimately involved with the feasibility study and operationalition of South Africa’s first ESWL unit.

In 1988 he turned his attention to health economics and healthcare management and obtained a MBA (1991) and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Health Management (Economics and Financial Planning) (1995).

As Medical Advisor to the Chamber of Mines (1990-1996) he was responsible for co-ordination, policy formulation and strategic planning of all health-related issues and services in the South African mining industry.

Izak Fourie held the position of Extra-ordinary Professor in the Department of Actuarial and Insurance Science at Pretoria University from 1993-2002 and in 2002 started his own health care and HIV/AIDS risk management consulting company (Risk Monitor Group) of which he is still the senior consultant and CEO.

He recently (May 2009) completed an Executive Education Program in health care management at the Harvard Business School in Boston, USA.
