Professor Peter Rehder
Peter completed both his under- and post-graduate
studies in South Africa. He is currently professor of
Urology in the Medical University in Innsbruck, Austria.
Peter is internationally known for his work on
post-prostatectomy incontinence and specifically his
developmental work on the Advance Male Sling. Peter will
talk to us on new developments the use of the male sling
[Advance] and will present a practical demonstration.

Prof.
Studer specialized in Urology 1982 and obtained Doctor
of Medicine at the University of Geneva in 1973. He was
appointed as Assistant Professor of Urology at the
University of Bern in 1985 and as Professor and chairman
of Urology in 1994. He has several appointments at other
universities including the Universities of Lausanne,
Geneva and California. Prof. Studer was elected as an
Honorary Member of the European Association of Urology
(EAU) 2009. He oversees several research projects and he
has numerous scientific publications and has been
awarded several awards for presentations relating to
urinary diversion at AUA and EAU meetings including a
first prize at the Swiss Society of Urology and EAU in
1988.

Prof. Dr. Med. Andreas J. Gross

Prof Gross did his Urology training at Medizinische

He has published 82 scientific articles and done 155
scientific presentations. He is currently Head of

Dr. Landman

|
Dr. Landman is the Director of Minimally Invasive
Urology in the Department of Urology at Columbia
University College of Physicians and Surgeons and an
Associate Professor of Urology at Columbia University
College of Physicians and Surgeons. He has extensive
clinical expertise in laparoscopic renal and prostate
surgery and endoscopic management of urinary tract
pathology. He has pioneered technology and techniques
for minimally invasive management of renal malignancies,
and has developed novel techniques which are used
globally for laparoscopic partial nephrectomy.

Prof David Waltregny
 |
David Waltregny is currently professor of clinics and
senior staff urologist in the Department of Urology at
the University Hospital of Liège, Belgium. He holds
membership in several professional and scientific
organizations, among which the European Association of
Urology, and he is a founding member of the Belgian
Association of Urology.
After receiving his MD from the University of Liège,
David Waltregny became a Senior Research Associate of
the Belgian National Fund for Scientific Research,
studying the mechanisms of tumor invasion and
metastasis, and hormone-independence in human prostate
cancer. He then received a PhD from the University of
Liège and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the
Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School, in
Boston.
David Waltregny is the author and co-author of numerous
publications in top-ranked international journals and is
currently pursuing his research works in the Center for
Experimental Cancer Research at the University of Liège.
David Waltregny largely participated in the development
of the TVT-Obturator device together with its inventor,
Pr Jean de Leval, at the University of Liège in Belgium.
He is pursuing the development of new surgical devices
for the treatment of male incontinence that occurs after
radical prostatectomy. |

Prof Manoj Monga
 |
|
Prof. Manoj Monga currently holds the post of the Joseph
Sorkness Endowed Professor of Urologic Surgery Professor
with Tenure at the University of Minnesota and is
Medical director of the University of Minnesota Medical
Centre. He obtained his MD at the Chicago Medical School
in 1990 and trained as a Urologist at Tulane University
in New Orleans. He has a particular interest in
Endourology, is a member of several international
societies, has published widely and has won several
prizes for the best of category presentations over
several years at World Congresses of Endourology. Prof.
Monga will participate in our Endourology workshop and
do podium presentations during the congress.

Dr. Gerald Brock

Dr. Gerald Brock is Professor, Department of Surgery,
Division of Urology, at St. Joseph’s Health Centre in
London, Ontario. He completed his Medical and Urology
Degrees at McGill University in Montreal and
subsequently did a two year fellowship in Neurourology
with Dr. Tom Lue at the University of California, San
Francisco. He currently runs a large tertiary care
erectile dysfunction clinic at St. Joseph’s Health Care,
where he sees between 2000-2500 new consults annually.
In addition to his responsibilities of resident
teaching, he runs a productive basic animal research lab
evaluating the impact of disease on erectile mechanisms.
Dr. Brock is an active participant in professional
associations, previous Chair of the Canadian Male Sexual
Health Council (affiliate of the Canadian Urology
Association - CUA), past chair of the Guidelines
Committee of the CUA. He currently serves as the
Administrative Chairman of the CUA Scholarship Fund,
treasurer of the Canadian Urology Research Consortium
and serves as Chair of the Scientific Research Committee
of the Canadian Society for the Study of the Aging Male.
Dr. Brock is the author of over 100 peer reviewed
publications, 20 book chapters as well as numerous
abstracts. Over the past decade he has been invited to
speak across Canada, the USA, Europe, Australia and
Asia. Dr. Brock has been awarded over 20 research prizes
for his clinical and basic research endeavours
evaluating the impact of disease states on erectile and
ejaculatory mechanisms.
Dr. Brock’s work in urology and erectile dysfunction is
acknowledged by his role as an Editorial Board member of
the Journal of Sexual Medicine, Andrology, Chronicle of
Medicine and Sexual Health, and as an ad hoc reviewer
for the Journal of Physiology, Journal of Urology,
Urology, and the International Journal of Impotence
Research.

Dr. Ian Aaronson

Ian qualified at Cambridge University and St
Bartholomew's Hospital.
He holds an MRCP, FRCS and post-graduate Diplomas in
Paediatric Surgery and Urology. Since 1992 he has been
Professor and Head of Urology and Paediatric Urology at
the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston,
South Carolina. He is an elected member of several
leading international Paediatric Surgical and Urological
associations, has been a visiting Professor at leading
Medical Schools in several countries and has many
scientific publications and presentations to his name.
Ian will address us on several current Paediatric
Urology controversies. |

Dr. Castro-Diaz

David Castro-Diaz was born and raised in Santa Cruz de
Tenerife, Spain. He received his medical degree from the
University of La Laguna (Canary Islands, Spain) in 1979.
He was Resident of Urology at the University Hospital of
the Canary Islands between 1980- 1984. Dr. Castro-Diaz
completed his training in the UK and USA. In 1990 he was
appointed as Full Professor of Urologist at the
University of La Laguna. His main clinical and research
interest is focused on Voiding Dysfunction and Female
Urology. He has published 4 books and authored more than
100 papers. Dr. Castro-Diaz is Professor of Urology and
Consultant Urologist at the University Hospital of the
Canary Islands (Spain). He is a member of several

He has been Scientific Chairman and Vice-President of
the Spanish Association of Urology and member of the
Board of the European School of Urology (Education
Office of the European Association of Urology). He also
served as Spanish representative at the European Board
of Urology and Chairman of the EBU Residency Review
Committee. At present he is a member of the panel of the
EAU guidelines for Neurogenic voiding dysfunction and
the International Consultation on Incontinence. |

Prof. Paddy Dewan

Paddy trained in Australia, New Zealand and Europe
including two years at Great Ormond Street Hospital. He
holds several fellowships in Surgery and Paediatric
Surgery and obtained a PhD in Plastics in Urology. He is
currently Professor of Paediatric Urology at the
University of Melbourne and visiting Professor in Papua
New Guinea. He holds many awards, serves on many
academic advisory boards and has published more than 250
papers. Paddy will address us in the podium session on
various aspect of vesico-ureteric reflux and also
participate in our clinical Paediatric Urology case
presentations and discussion session.

Dr. Kristene E. Whitmore is medical director of the
Pelvic and Sexual Health Institute in Philadelphia, PA.
She is chair of urology and female pelvic medicine and
reconstructive surgery as well as professor of urology
and OBGYN at Drexel University College of Medicine where
she also serves as program director of the female pelvic
medicine and reconstructive surgery fellowship.
Whitmore is the founder/director of the Pelvic and
Sexual Health Institute of Philadelphia, where she
functions as lead
clinician/researcher/consultant/medical educator. She
has trained over 90 residents and fellows in female
urology and pelvic floor reconstruction and has 9,500
interstitial cystitis patients.
Whitmore has clinical research interests in urinary
incontinence, voiding dysfunction, interstitial
cystitis, female sexual dysfunction and pelvic floor
disorders. She has been published extensively in
peer-reviewed journals including the Journal of Urology,
Urology, American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology,
Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology and International
Journal of Urogynecology. She is the author of
Overcoming Bladder Disorders: Compassionate,
Authoritative Medical and Self-Help Solutions for
Incontinence, Cystitis, Interstitial Cystitis and has
been a contributor in the lay press including Prevention
Magazine, Cosmopolitan, Ladies' Home Journal, U.S. News
& World Report and others. She is a frequent guest on
national television and has been featured on the “Good
Morning America” and “This Morning” programs.
Whitmore serves on the advisory boards of: the National
Association for Continence, the Simon Foundation, the
Interstitial Cystitis Association, and the Women’s
Health Foundation. She also serves on the government
relations committee of the American Urogynecologic
Society.

Prof Werner Schaefer

Prof Werner Schaefer is director of the Geriatric
Continence Research Center at the University of
Pittsburgh, PA, USA. His current prime interest is in
the comprehensive urodynamic investigation of older
women with overactive bladder, detrusor overactivity,
and urgency incontinence with a primary focus on
unraveling the specific contributions of the bladder,
sphincter, and brain, and of optimizing
non-pharmacologic therapy.
Werner Schaefer graduated from RWTH Aachen Germany in
1972 with a degree in aeronautical and space
engineering, and continuing with post graduate studies
on biomechanics. For 30 years he headed the urodynamic’s
lab of the Dept of Urology at Aachen University Clinic.
During this time he worked in diverse areas such as the
upper urinary tract peristalsis and artificial bladder,
and his strong interest in voiding dynamics and BPH
resulted in the Schaefer nomogram for grading bladder
outflow obstruction and detrusor strength. His
engineering background made him a leader in developing
high quality urodynamic measurements, as is summarized
in the standardization report on Good Urodynamic
Practice of the International Continence Society, ICS.

Professor Mauro Cervigni

Graduated At Rome University in 1975 and Specialised in
Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1979 at Rome University. He
then specialized in Urology at Rome Sacred Heart
University with Professor Crucitti. Professor Cervigni
is currently Professor of Urogynecology at the
Obstetrics Gynecology and Urology Department of Catholic
University Gemelli Hospital, Rome from 2006. He also
holds the following scientific positions: Scientific
Secretary of the Italian Association of Gynecological
Urology (AIUG), European Representative of the Executive
Board of International Uro-Gynecological Association (IUGA),
Member of the executive board of the European Society of
Gynecological Urology, Member of the executive board of
the European Society of Study on Interstitial Cystitis (ESSIC)
and is a Member of the scientific board of the European
Urogynecological Association (EUGA). He will speak to us
on pelvic surgery and female Urology.

Professor Dr Ali Riza Kural

Professor Dr Ali Riza Kural is currently the chief of
Urology Department of Istanbul Bilim University and
Robotic Section of Florence Nightingale Hospitals in
Istanbul, Turkey. He had his MD at Istanbul University,
School of Medicine in 1974.Then he had urology training
in urology department of Cerrahpasa School of Medicine,
Istanbul University. Dr Kural worked with Professor
Chisholm in Western General Hospital of Edinburgh
University in 1985 as honorary registrar. He initiated
“the endoscopic stone treatment of urinary stone
disease” program in 1996 and “laparoscopic urological
oncology program” in 2002, in Cerrahpasa School of
Medicine of Istanbul University,both were one of the
first in the country. He was the president of Turkish
Endourological Society between 2005 and 2007.
His main interest is endourology and currently
especially Robotic Surgery. He built the first robotic
urology program in the region including the Eastern
Europe and the Middle East. Dr Kural arranged a number
of courses and meetings locally and internationally. He
is the member of Endourological Society, American
Urological Society, European Urological Association and
Turkish Urological Association. He joined to the board
of European Robotic Urology Association ( ERUS ) in
January 2010. He will be the president of 2012 World
Congress of Endourology (WCE), in Istanbul.

Dr. Farid Saad

Dr. Farid Saad is Head of Scientific Affairs for
Men’s Healthcare at Bayer Schering Pharma AG. Farid has
received an honorary professorship in clinical research
and endocrinology at Gulf Medical College, Ajman, United
Arab Emirates as well as an honorary professorship at
the Men’s Health reproduction study center, Hang Tuah
University, Surabaya, Indonesia. |
Dr. Tim Sayer
Dr. Tim Sayer is part of a team of five consultants responsible for the routine care in obstetrics and gynaecology. They have an on call system to directly involve the consultant on the labour ward for 40 hours per week in accordance with RCOG guidelines.
Tim’s special interest has been in pelvic organ prolapse and lower urinary tract dysfunction. The urogynaecological unit now consists of a suite of five rooms, two for investigation and treatment and three for office/consultation purposes. Staffing includes one consultant, one nursing sister, a part time staff nurse, health care assistant and a secretary. Two consultant clinics and four nurse investigations clinics are performed per week along with research and nurse lead physiotherapy clinics.
Dr. Sayer has developed laparoscopic surgery at The North Hampshire Hospital and is a preceptor for laparoscopic surgery for the RCOG.

Lance
Coetzee obtained the FCS (URO) S.A and Mmed (URO) part
III in 1992. He has been a consultant Urologist at
Pretoria Academic Hospital, Fellow at Duke University
and is currently in Private Practice at the Pretoria
Urology Hospital. He is President of the Prostate Cancer
foundation. Lance has published numerous articles and
done many presentations at local and international
conferences and won many local and international awards.
He was invited to in 1999 to act as co-chairman for a
4-day radical perineal prostatectomy workshop (including
live surgery) in London. Lance will speak on radical
perineal prostatectomy in the management of prostate
cancer.

Dr. Conradie
 |
|
Dr Marius Conradie has been the Head of Urology
at the Pietermaritzburg Metropolitan Hospital
Complex since 2006. After obtaining his degree
as a urologist at the Nelson R Mandela School of
Medicine, he furthered his Endourology training
at the Washington University. His main focus in
his professional and academic career is
laparoscopic urology where he played a leading
role in the development and training of
laparoscopic urological surgery in South Africa
and has developed innovative laparoscopic
techniques. Dr Conradie has received a number of
national and international awards in recognition
of his clinical research in the field of
Endourology. He is a founding member of the
Southern African Endourology Society and is
currently serving as the President. Dr. Conradie
will be chairing the Endourology workshop and
speaking on Laparoscopic Renal Surgery.

Professor Amo Jordaan
Prof. Jordaan obtained his MBChB in Stellenbosch and his
post-graduate qualifications at Bloemfontein. He has
been Professor and head of Oncology at the University of
KwaZulu Natal since 1980 and has become a household name
in Oncology, both in and outside South Africa. Amo will
participate in our practical seminar on the management
of localized prostate cancer and will speak on the place
of external beam radiotherapy in prostate cancer.

Dr. T. Murray MacKenzie
 |
|
Murray obtained his MBChB in 1974 and FCS [Ed] in 1983
and FCS [SA] in 1985.
He has been in private Urological Practice in Durban
since that time. Murray has always been involved in the
forefront of the management of prostate cancer and
introduced transrectal ultrasound biopsies to Urologists
in 1990 at the Durban congress. He has been an ardent
learner, advocate and teacher of Brachytherapy of
prostate cancer since it was launched. Murray attended
several local and international Brachytherapy teaching
courses, has lectured locally and internationally on the
subject and has been instrumental in establishing
several Brachytherapy units, both local and in other
African states. Murray will conduct our pre-congress
Brachytherapy workshop and also speak at the congress.

Dr. Ramphal
Suren obtained his under- and post graduate
qualifications as a Gynecologist at the University of
KwaZulu Natal. He has been a very active in
Urogynecology and pelvic reconstruction surgery and is
an international accredited surgical demonstrator for
Gynecare. Suren works very hard to promote academic and
scientific principles in the field of pelvic and
incontinence surgery and has presented and promoted
several international workshops. He will participate and
speak to us in the session on pelvic reconstruction and
suburethral tape surgery.

Professor Smith

|
Dr.Arthur
Smith is Chairman Emeritus of the Department of Urology
at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. He is world
renowned for the management of kidney and ureteral
stones.He developed a minimally invasive technique for
removing kidney stones and has performed this procedure
in more than 5000 patients.He started the Endourology
Society and was the President of that society for over
20 years.
Dr.Smith has received many awards for his innovative
clinical research including the prestigious “Hugh
Hampton Young Award” from the American Urological
Society.He has been rated amongst the “Amerias Best
Doctors” and “Best Doctors in New York “
for over 10 years .He is an honorary member of numerous
international Urological Societies including the
British, Indian, Peruvian and Dutch societies and the
South African urology Society. He is the recipient of an
Honorary Doctorate from the University of Athens.
Dr.Smith is still in active practice doing what he does
best….treating the patient.

Dr. Voigt

|
Heinrich Voigt is a Urologist in private practice in Bloemfontein. He received the degree Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in 1996 through the University of the Orange Free State. He was admitted as a Fellow of the College of Urologists of South Africa after passing the FC Urol (SA) Final exam of the College of Medicine of South Africa in 2003, and received the degree Magister in Medicine: Specialisation in Urology in 2004 through of the University of the Free State. He also consults part time on Urology for the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of the Free State. He will be speaking on sacral nerve neurostimulation.

Dr Rinus Wiersma

Rinus initially obtained a BSc degree in Zoology in 1971
and then completed his MBChB degree at the University of
Rhodesia in 1976. Having obtained his FRCP in Glasgow in
1985 he joined the Paediatric Surgery Department at the
University of Natal the following year. He presently
holds the position of Senior Specialist in the
Paediatric Surgery Department at the Inkosi Albert
Luthuli Central Hospital and is Honarary Secretary of
the South African Association of Paediatric Surgeons.
Rinus has developed his interest in Paediatric Urology,
particularly in the fields of hypospadiology and
intersex, and obtained his PhD in 2009 for his work on
True Hermaphroditism in Southern Africa. He will present
his more recent original research on the subject of
paediatric urethro-epididymal reflux and no doubt add
insightful local experience to the panel discussion
session.

Prof. Schalk Wentzel
Schalk is a graduate of Bloemfontein University, where
he is currently the professor and head of Urology. In a
relatively short time he has made a significant impact
on academic Urology in South Africa and was congress
president of our previous hugely successful Urology
congress in 2008. Schalk has a particular interest in
the radical surgical management of localized prostate
cancer and will participate in our symposium of the
management of this localized prostate cancer. |

Dr. Naas Viljoen

Naas Viljoen studied Medicine at the University of Cape
Town. Subsequently he gained degrees at the Universities
of Pretoria (MSc -Anatomy) and Stellenbosch ( MMed-Urology)
In 1971 he became the first candidate to obtain ' FCS
(SA) with Urology '
He spent half his professional life as urologist in
private practice then became a "full-timer" at the
University of the Free State
Viljoen retired as Head of the Department of Urology,at
the mandatory age, in April 2002. He moved, happily with
his wife Lazelle, to Hermanus, on the coast, near Cape
Town.

Dr. Stephen Mark Eppel

Dr Eppel graduated from the University of the
Witwatersrand completing his urologic training there,
and obtaining the FRCS from Edinburgh. After registering
as a South African Specialist Urologist he and his
family immigrated to the United States in 1986. There he
did further training, becoming an American Board
Certified Urologist and also completing a Neuro-Urology
Fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.
After two years of academics and teaching at the
University of Minnesota in Minneapolis Dr Eppel and his
family settled in Memphis, Tennessee where he was part
of a large successful private practice for 13 years.
The entire family returned to South Africa in 2006 where
Dr Eppel has established a private practice at
Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital and initiated and
developed the Ablatherm HIFU programme in South Africa.

Professor Larry Hadley

Professor Larry (GP) Hadley is the Head of Paediatric
Surgery, at the University of KwaZulu Natal. He has an
interest in Paediatic Surgery Oncology and Paediatric
Surgery in developing countries. |
